The History of Harris Tweed

Originating in Scotland and Ireland as practical peasant wear, the beloved tweed has humble roots. It provided excellent protection against the harsh climate of the Northern British Isles. Tweed was generally woven by farmers for their family members to wear. Harris Tweed originated in the remote islands of the Outer Hebrides, on the Isle of Harris. Historically, Harris Tweed was woven by local crofters and their families using wool from their own sheep.The tradition of weaving Harris Tweed by hand has been passed down through generations of islanders, and it remains an important part of the local economy and cultural heritage. Harris Tweed’s exceptional quality became so well-regarded that surplus fabric was often used as a form of currency for islanders. Eventually, Harris Tweed was introduced to Britain as a whole. Demands for the amazing Harris Tweed kept rising in the 20th century. This gave way for counterfeits to come into the market. 

So, to prevent poorer quality tweed from passing as Harris Tweed and tarnishing the name, in 1933, an Act of Parliament was passed to protect its authenticity and quality standards. 

Today, Harris Tweed is still hand-woven by skilled weavers in the Outer Hebrides, and it is protected by a trademark that ensures that only tweed made in the traditional way and from locally-sourced wool can be marketed as Harris Tweed. Until now, Harris Tweed remains the only fabric in the world protected by a law of Parliament.

Every 50 meters of Harris Tweed fabric is checked by an official inspector. When deemed fit for the Harris Tweed standards, the fabric would then be marked by an official trademark called the “Orb Mark.”

Even though Harris Tweed is shipped to more than 50 countries today, it’s still produced in the very same islands it originated. Thus, making Harris Tweed one of the most exclusive and highly coveted traditional fabrics in the world.
